Poetry & Plates: The Third 4C Group and UKNA Bursary

10 February 2025

In April 2024, UK New Artists (UKNA) and 4C Group proudly announced Jamaican poet Courtney Conrad, based in Buckinghamshire, as the recipient of the prestigious 2024/25 Bursary Award. This marks an exciting chapter in the partnership between UKNA and 4C Group, which launched in 2022 to support emerging artists and provide valuable opportunities for UKNA Alumni over three years.

The collaboration between UKNA and 4C Group has been a catalyst for change, acknowledging the challenges faced by artists who may struggle to advance their careers without support. Central to this partnership is the annual 4C Group Bursary, a £10,000 investment that gives the opportunity to the selected artist to focus on their professional practice and creative development. Over the last two years, past bursary recipients, such as Wesley George (2022) and Parham Ghalamdar (2023), have each used their grant to push their artistic boundaries and explore new creative frontiers.

Courtney Conrad’s submission stood out during an open call to UKNA Alumni artists, with her profound exploration of complex themes and her ability to spark vital conversations through poetry. Her work addresses the deep emotional and psychological impacts on family dynamics, friendships, and self-identity, with particular attention to the experiences of women grappling with tokophobia — the fear of pregnancy. By amplifying the voices of marginalized groups and highlighting taboo experiences, Courtney aims to challenge societal stigma and create space for dialogue around difficult and often ignored topics.

Courtney Conrad, UKNA 4C Group Bursary Awardee said, “This is truly a full-circle moment as my poetry journey began with UKNA’s City Takeover. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for this grant, which fuels my dedication to my craft and empowers me to delve into ambitious projects. I appreciate the time, efforts, and consideration of UKNA, the 4C Group, and Canopy by Hilton London City Hotel.”

As part of the bursary, Courtney will undertake a unique residency at the Canopy by Hilton London City Hotel, a 340-room eco-conscious property in Aldgate, owned and managed by 4C Group. Starting in January 2025, she Courtney will engage with hotel team members and guests, using these encounters to inspire a new body of work. This residency will also offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity for guests to engage with Courtney through intimate ‘Coffee with a Poet’ sessions. These informal gatherings will give visitors the chance to meet the poet, enjoy a coffee, and receive a personalized poem, offering a deeper connection with her creative process.

The residency will culminate in an exclusive VIP dinner at Penny Squares Italian Restaurant, hosted by UKNA and Canopy by Hilton London City. During this special evening, Courtney will share the powerful poetry she has created throughout her time at the hotel, offering guests a chance to witness the culmination of her unique journey and the meaningful conversations it has sparked.

The 4C Group and UKNA Bursary continue to foster creative growth and provide invaluable opportunities for talented artists like Courtney Conrad. By nurturing diverse voices and supporting innovative projects, this partnership plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the arts in the UK and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates on Courtney’s residency and her exciting new work, as we look forward to celebrating her remarkable contributions to the creative world.
